Where did the summer go? The kiddos are heading back to school, the days are getting shorter and soon it will be time to put the Grill away. I always miss grilling my hotdogs, hamburgers, and chicken, but most of all I miss making Smore’s! That warm gooey toasted marshmallow, served on a graham cracker with a piece of rich chocolate that starts to melt before you take a bite. That enchanting marshmallow treat that makes every cookout magical!
Did you know that the first recipe for smores was recorded as a Girl Scout campfire treat in the 1920’s?
I found a recipe reminiscent of that summertime marshmallow magic that will leave your family and friends wanting some more.
2 Pizza crusts: store bought pizza crust or homemade
¼ cup slivered almonds
3 tablespoon butter
1 sleeve graham cracker, crushed
½ teaspoon chili pepper
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
A pinch of salt
3 cups mini marshmallows
½ cup of American Heritage Historic Chocolate Drink Mix
4 American Heritage Historic Chocolate Sticks
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Prepare pizza crust as directed on package. Cook if needed. I used store bought premade thin crust pizza crust and no prebaking was necessary.
Toast almonds slivered in a sauté pan over medium high heat. (Stir often, 2-3 Minutes)
While almonds are roasting prepare the graham cracker crumb.
Place one sleeve of graham crackers into gallon size Ziploc bag and press with hands or rolling pin until you have crumbs
Remove Almonds and in same pan, melt butter.
When butter is melted, add in graham cracker crumbs, chili powder, cayenne, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Microwave the American Heritage Historic Chocolate Drink in microwave bowl for 1 minute, remove and stir.
For Pizza Top
Top one of the crusts with half of the marshmallows, lightly drizzle chocolate sauce over the marshmallows and place in oven for 3-5 minutes until marshmallows are puffy and light brown
Chop/shave the American Heritage Chocolate Sticks into tiny pieces (¼ inch pieces)
Remove Pizza crust from oven and sprinkle with the ½ graham cracker mixture and top with the ½ toasted slivered almonds and ½ chocolate pieces. Return to oven for 1 minute to just slightly melt the chocolate bites.
Repeat to make second pizza
Let rest 2-3 minutes, slice and serve.
The unique blend of the American Heritage spices blended with an American beloved favorite dessert brings back warm memories of Campfires past.
